Autism Poem

One year ago (Jan. 22, 2019) I wrote this poem after having a conversation with my friend (fellow Autism mom). It made me realize that Autism needs to be discussed more; the good and bad. It’s life, it’s our normal.

Autism
Anything but a walk in the park
Exhaustion is the “norm”

Days filled with leaps and bounds
Victories and defeats
Celebrations for social interactions & sensory tolerance
Tears for hard regressions
Tears for progress

Routines, Stims, PECS, ASL, Tablets, Therapy
Tools for daily living

Feelings of love and loneliness
The village of therapists, support groups, friends, and family

The loneliness of skipping certain activities and events (for the time being)
Wanting acceptance for the individual, not the diagnoses

Autism
Anything but a walk in the park
Autism is hard
Autism is tiresome

Autism
Opens the door to perspective
Advanced communication skills
New people
An unconditional love that’s truly like no other

Being aware, accepting and nonjudgmental

The celebrations
The love
Ten fold

Autism
Not for the faint hearted, but for the heart that knows no limit

Written by an Autism mom trying to give her son the best life and prepping the world for all things AJ.

Until next blog ❤ Suhay

These pictures were taken four days after AJ’s diagnosis. I remember the tears I felt trying to picture his future.
